Five Red Bank Middle School (RBMS) students took the spotlight alongside seasoned mentors for a performance that proved the success of a unique local music initiative.
The ensemble, known as LIVE TO ROCK, delivered a poised and crowd-pleasing rendition of “Die With a Smile” during what marked only their third public performance. The group’s stage presence was a testament to dedicated work, reflecting the impact of a program designed to bridge the gap between classroom music and live stage performance.
The performance underscored the effectiveness of the Rockit Academy’s mentorship model. Throughout the school year, RBMS students have worked closely with Rockit Academy students Luke Ireland, Emersyn Freund, Max Samuels, and Maddie Freeman. Under the guidance of Rockit instructor Brittany Iafelice, these mentors have provided technical instruction and performance coaching, turning the after-school program into a collaborative environment.
“The Rockit Difference is our commitment to the student,” said a representative from the board of the Rockit Live Foundation. “As a non-profit, we are designed intentionally to benefit the student, not a profit margin.”
The LIVE TO ROCK program returned to Red Bank Middle School in January 2025, marking its first appearance since the COVID-19 pandemic. Fully funded by the Rockit Live Foundation, the program removes the financial barriers often associated with music education.
The initiative is open to all students, regardless of prior experience, and focuses on:
- Technical Skill Development: Instruction on instruments and performance mechanics.
- Music Education: Exploring diverse genres and the history behind the music.
- Confidence Building: Providing a professional stage environment at Asbury Lanes for session shows in November, March, and June.
The program runs every Wednesday from October to May, and organizers emphasize that students are welcome to join at any point during the academic year.
For the students of Red Bank Middle School, the program offers more than just a musical education—it provides a rare opportunity to learn the ropes of the industry from their peers in a supportive, professional setting. As the program looks toward its future sessions, the Rockit Live Foundation continues to seek support from the community to ensure that music remains accessible for all local students.
